  1. The wife just talked with LaMark Combs, and he said he doesn’t support the Guardian Angels. He feels the GAs are making it look as if we don’t need more police.

  2. What is sad is I emailed the 3 running for Mayor. Gluba has not read his yet. Yerington replied and Howard read and chose to ignore my questions. Guess it is now between Yarington and Gluba. Lets see if Gluba replies but I know now Howard is out she is hiding and refuses to reply to legit questions and she thinks she should run our city. I hope not.

  3. I went to walk through the new police station today and had a very enjoyable tour! There was one downfall to my tour and that was that Donald Snyder (candidate for 1st ward) was in my group. He began the tour by antagonizing the officer showing us the traffic room. Mr. Snyder held up our tour group and acted rudely toward the officer by raising his voice during the conversation. He appeared to have quite a few complaints throughout the tour, but did not offer any solutions. I understand the importance of getting the officers on the streets and not sitting behind desks, but the grand opening of the police station was NOT the appropriate time to “discuss” the issue. If you live in the first ward, I would be leary of voting for him because I would be concerned about his ability to act appropriately and offer solutions rather than all complaints.

  6. Isn’t Les Miller part of the group that wants to raze everything in McClellan Hgts. and return it to the Native Americans? No, I’m not kidding. Such a group exists and they are serious. Way to lower tax revenues in a hurry.

  13. Thank you to everyone who has submitted candidate info. I hope we have a good crop of educated voters this round.

Comment by Snarky Chick | September 13, 2007

  14. Davenport needs to implement drug testing for candidates. If they did I know for sure the pool of candidates would be one less.

    Comment by anom | September 15, 2007

  15. How do you know? Are you the drug dealer? Alright, let’s get to smearing started. This is going to be fun, but I guess this will get us ready for November 2008.

BTW, I will vote against anyone who bothers me during an Iowa State game. Last time, Rita Vargas’s opponent, used an autodialer when Iowa State was on tv. I was not going to vote for her until then. If you want my vote, check Iowa State’s schedule.

  19. Keith-tell your friends to stop taking Bill Boom’s signs out of our yard.

    Comment by Anonymous | September 21, 2007

  20. Doug Cunningham is a not a good option for Fifth Ward Alderman. He will not represent the 5th ward well at all. LOOK into his background people! CHECK out the neighborhood he lives in! There is NO way this person should be part of our city government. He will do all he can to help out his buddies, but the Fifth Ward will become the joke of the city.

There is dirt out there on this man. Do you really want it to hit the media Doug?

    Comment by Anonymous | September 21, 2007

  21. Well I know Doug has a meet and greet today at the corner of Kirkwood and gains. It goes from 8 – 7 so maybe stop down and check him out.

The 5th really doesn’t make much choice doug or bill?

    Comment by Anonymous | September 22, 2007

  22. If you are interested in talking to Doug or finding out his “dirt” I suggest that you call him. He will answer questions, and he will tell you if there is anything to know. BTW he is also fully expecting the smear campaigning to begin by QCRPA, so none of this is a surprise to him. Actually he is knocking doors from 10-7 today, beginning at 9:00 at Kirkwood and Grand. But you can reach him at doug@dougcunningham.org or 323-3127. Finally yes he does actually live SOLO on Arlington Court, a neighborhood like all others SOLO that needs revitilization, I seriously doubt that anyone will count that against him.

    Comment by Anonymous | September 22, 2007

  23. The anti QCRPA is doing a good job of smearing, too( along with the attitude that they are only allowed to smear). Why don’t both sides shut up and say what you would do representing the city? I don’t want to hear Doug’s dirt, I don’t want to hear Lubell’s dirt, I don’t want to hear Keith’s dirt. Get the point? I want to find out who would do the best for the city.

Now, threaten to give me a freaking butt kicking for suppporting the QCRPA, anit QCRPA, Doug, Lubell or Keith.

    Comment by nitrous55 | September 22, 2007

  24. I supported Doug today and went door to door for him. I give the man credit he was right along side of us hitting door to door.

After speaking to him today he has my vote

    Comment by Anonymous | September 22, 2007

  25. Comment #5 is wrong address for Les Miller.

Vote for Miller and get Les!

    Comment by anom | September 22, 2007

  26. I agree – Bill Lynn’s signs say he is after a change, but I seriously question for whom. With his recent antics for the QCRPA, it appears that he wants to change things in favor of the landlords and not the homeowners of his ward.

    Comment by anon | September 22, 2007

  27. What I want to know is why Lynn is complaing about workers viewing sites from work but he himself owns a vending comapny and uses his WORK email at Abrose for others to contact him. now why is that ok they can email him at work?

    Comment by Anonymous | September 22, 2007

  28. The QCRPA are children. It’s time to grow up now.

    Comment by anon | September 24, 2007

  29. So are the anti QCRPA. Go look at the So-Lo Blog.

    Comment by nitrous55 | September 25, 2007

  30. Yeah, I really wish we could have some intelligent debate about the slumlord problems without calling names. There are slumlords in Davenport, and lots of them. What are we going to do to fix the problem? QCRPA could be a tool for change or it could be obstructionist. YOu have to work with others though, if you ever wish for change.

Comment by Snarky Chick | September 25, 2007

  31. Sorry Snarky – the QCRPA have proven over and over to not be team players. They pretned to be at the table, then they come election time act really badly. They are hard to trust.

    Comment by anon | September 25, 2007

  32. Don’t think I’m taking the side of the QCRPA and slumlords. I do think the organization should take some responsibility for the state of the current rental problems and be seeking a solution to bring some respectability back to the profession.

Not to kill this line of thought but I’d like to keep this thread to candidate information only so if you would like to continue talking about this take it to another thread. Thanks :)

Comment by Snarky Chick | September 25, 2007

  33. Why don’t the candidates post some ideas they have? It would help them get a few more votes and we would know who we are dealing with. I emailed Doug Cunningham and he did offer some ideas.

    Comment by nitrous55 | September 26, 2007

  34. Candidates are welcome to post their ideas or contact me for a guest post.

Comment by Snarky Chick | September 28, 2007

  35. FYI – Most of the candidates Q & A surveys from the QC Times are online at http://www.qctimes.com/elections2008/local/

    Comment by Anon | October 1, 2007

  36. If you click on the candidates name above you will go directly to their QCTimes Q&A. Only a couple are missing.

Comment by Snarky Chick | October 1, 2007

  37. Great Snarky, I apologize for the FYI then, I just hadn’t realized. Thanks for keeping this up…

    Comment by Anon | October 1, 2007

  38. Whats wrong with Les Miller? Does he just like to throw his name in the pool or is he just after the “Bar” vote? Not hearing anything from him. Hey Les, what are you all about?

    Comment by anom | October 1, 2007

  39. Snarky, just to let you know, some of the “Name” links you talked about don’t take us to the Q and A section for the candidate, but to their Bio from the times instead. Is there anyway you can change this to Q and A for all? Thank you for your help!!!

    Comment by Anonymous | October 1, 2007

  40. Anonymous – you’re right, I’ll work on it.

Comment by Snarky Chick | October 2, 2007

  41. Snarky – You rock. Thanks for fixing that for us!

    Comment by Anonymous | October 2, 2007

  42. No problem, I’m glad to help.

Comment by Snarky Chick | October 2, 2007

  43. Eric Swanson in the 7th ward. Isn’t he a cop who got fired for shooting a 14 year old kid?
Not someone I would want running my ward

    Comment by Anonymous | October 4, 2007

  44. Why don’t you look and find out? I think the Times would have mentioned it or someone else. But I bet you won’t.

    Comment by nitrous55 | October 7, 2007

  45. Why don’t you have my Q&A on here? The times put me under the 7th ward, I’m in the 8th but maybe you could still link it to my Q & A. Thanks! Hope everyone votes in the primary tomorrow.
    Becky

Comment by Becky Schabilion | October 8, 2007

  46. Becky – are you affiliated with Dan Lubell? If so, why?

Will you get the crappy rentals in the city cleaned up?

What is your position on the rent to own ordinance recently passed?

    Comment by anon | October 8, 2007

  47. Did the QC Times do endorsements for all wards or just mayor and at-large? If they did it for all, where can I find them? Thanks!

    Comment by Anonymous | October 8, 2007

  48. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have but I don’t understand why you want to be anonymous? Are you hiding? I think if you read my Q & A you’ll find some of the answers you’re looking for. Thanks.

Comment by Becky Schabilion | October 8, 2007

  49. So why would I have to tell you who I am to get the answers?

I just got a call from Mike Steen who is a friend of Lubell and a member of the QCRPA – the autodialer said that Gluba wants to give amnesty to illegal immigrants. Do you support his line of thinking Becky?

    Comment by anon | October 8, 2007

  50. Do you think that the city government has a roll in illegal immigration and if so, how?

    Comment by anon | October 8, 2007

  51. Why do I have to tell you who I am for you to tell me – an 8th ward resident if you are going to help rid our ward of bad landlords and tenants? I don’t get that? You seem to be a long shot to me.

    Comment by anon | October 8, 2007

  52. Good for you 54!

    Comment by Anonymous | October 8, 2007

  53. Thanks Becky, I didn’t see it when I put them up, it’s included now, and just in time as I’m trying to put together a post on the 8th ward.

Comment by Snarky Chick | October 8, 2007

  54. I always amazes that some people have such little self perception when it comes to running for office. Marcia – maybe you should answer the posters questions. When you are elected are you going to put off people too. Get a clue lady.

You answers to the survey tell us you are a proud member of the most hated political group in this town – the QCRPA. You lost my vote and actually never had it. Get a clue. Did Dan Lubell put you up to the bonehead idea of running. Here is a hint – don’t listen to him.

    Comment by anon | October 8, 2007

  55. I am sorry – I am talking abotu Becky – not Marcia. SOrry marcia – you seem nice.

    Comment by anon | October 8, 2007

  56. Anon and Anon: I believe my answers in the survey, if you read them correctly, state that I am a PAST member of the QCRPA. PAST, as in many years ago. Maybe you should re-read both of them before you degrade any of us. I don’t think this needs to get “nasty” and anon on this blog certainly seem to degrade alot of candidates. I will respond to the posters questions, but don’t feel like I want to be associated with anon posters that don’t know the facts. I am not “AFFILIATED” with Mr. Lubell, I do know him as do you obviously. Given the power, I’d get the “crappy” rentals cleaned up. What about some of the “crappy” residential homes in the city? And I do have an opinion on the rent-to-own ordinance. Cowards send things by anon. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can email me at Beckysold@aol.com.

Comment by Becky Schabilion | October 8, 2007

  57. I don’t think city gov’t can do anything about illegal immigration.

Comment by Becky Schabilion | October 8, 2007

  58. Becky, that is all some seem to be able to do. Why don’t we go back to the rental rules that were in place before Lynn showed up. There were no slumlords then…according to the anons. I am amazed that there were no slumlords ten years ago.

I still say, ban all rental properties. Then there would be no slumlords.

    Comment by nitrous55 | October 9, 2007

  59. Nitoues.
    Seeing you want rentls banned
Are you willing to buy me a home.

I have rented in Davenport for years. In fact at this point I have a pretty good landlord

    Comment by Anonymous | October 9, 2007

  60. Becky – are you a realtor? I need one.

    Comment by anon | October 9, 2007

  61. All I hear is how bad the rental association is and how we need to get rid the slumlords. The rules before Lynn didn’t work and no one else can come up with a better idea. Come up with an idea to get rid of the slumlords.

    Comment by nitrous55 | October 10, 2007

  62. A few candidates would love to speak openly about the rental problem and the rent to own ordinance but they can’t because they know that the auto-dialer and that gang will go after them in more ways than one. Ask others who have had their property and cars damaged after speaking out against those thugs and you’ll get why people are staying away from this during the election.

    Comment by Anonymous | October 10, 2007

  63. But you need to stand up to these people. If we, as a city, stand up to the thugs, a few things would change for the better. More cops or GA’s would help, but they can’t be everywhere. The slumlords and the bad tennants will leave when they figure out that every little thing they do is being watched. Notice that there are no slum houses on Middle Road in Davenport? The residents will not put up with it. We, as a city, need to be the same way.

    Comment by nitrous55 | October 11, 2007

  64. Thanks to all of my supporters that voted for me on Tuesday. Now the work starts. I am desperately in need of volunteers. I can’t possibly knock all of the doors in the 5th in the next month (but I will try…) We expect that negativity will enter into the campaign, but I don’t believe in becoming negative to combat that. As I’ve previously indicated I like Bill, but I think the 5th needs a change. I don’t plan to resort to autodialers, but they appear to sometimes be effective, and will likely be used by my opponent. Anyone who wants to help get my message out, make a donation or hold a meet and greet, please call 323-3127 or email doug@dougcunningham.org. I need your help to make this happen.

    Comment by Doug | October 11, 2007

  65. I will agree with you on one thing. Dan Labell will be using his auto dialer against you to help his buddy Lynn.
C’mon people we need to get Cunningham in and Lynn OUT Let help.

    Comment by Anonymous | October 11, 2007

  69. No, actually I’m working on it but have you tried to create a website? It’s not that easy. And very expensive to have done. I know you all insist on us having one, so as you’ve requested, I’m working on it. Thanks for looking though.

  70. Tom Carnahan’s email address is sherintom1999@yahoo.com. Can you please add this to his contact information. He is running for 2nd ward alderman. He’s a good man and I encourage anyone from the 2nd ward to please give him an opportunity to represent you. Thank you!

Bill Gluba’s son admit the following

“I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.

Now does this family sound like someone we want to run our city?

    Comment by Anonymous | October 23, 2007

  78. So I got home tonight ( I work sometimes 2nd) and there was a 10 reasons not to elect Bill Lynn flyer in my screen door. This concerns me because 1) I’ve volunteered for Doug at several events/times and I know that he isn’t behind this and 2) the Landlords may have learned what negative campaigning does and are doing this to themselves for the reverse effect (to get Lynn elected). I wonder if anyone has any information about who is distributing this. I’m not saying the piece isn’t well organized (true) etc. but I hope this doesn’t reflect negatively on Cunningham.

    Comment by Anonymous | October 23, 2007

  79. It has come to my attention that some handbills are being distributed in the 5th Ward labeled as “Neighbor News”. I want to make it clear this is not from myself or any of my committee members.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have campaigned twice for Alderman At Large and at NO time have I run a negative campaign. We maintain that if your message is not strong enough to win the election then you don’t belong in office.

As a personal message to Mr. Lynn, I give youmy assurance that this material doesw not emanate from me. I respect this office and myself more than that.

    Doug Cunningham

    Comment by Doug | October 24, 2007

  80. Does the mailing list who is distributing it? It should say something like “Friends of ….” or something similar. I think it’s illegal to not put the group name, but I could be wrong.

Comment by Snarky Chick | October 24, 2007

  81. The handbills don’t seem to have a printed by endorsement on them. I honestly don’t know who the responsible party is, I just felt it was important to state that myself and my committee are not responsible.

Please don’t forget my meet and greet tonight at the Yacht Club, on the end of Mound St. I will be available to answer any additional questions you or your readers may have then.

    Comment by Doug | October 25, 2007

  82. I highly suggest to those who did not attend the Mayor forum tonight at Genesis to go to http://www.qctimes.com and listen to. Your opinion on the candidate you are voting for MAY change. I know mine did.

  83. Care to give us the highlights? I won’t have time to listen to it until tomorrow.

Comment by Snarky Chick | November 1, 2007

  84. Yerington got two rounds of applausse and Gluba got to hear statements such as low blow, what a jerk. I voted for Gluba in the Primaries but after I saw and heard him tonight I must now vote Yerignton

    Comment by Anonymous | November 1, 2007

  85. very imformative forum I listened to . my issue is Gluba if elected will try to make Davenport an Inernational city and he wants to bring companies from Japan and elsewhere. my thought is will this support him and his illegal aliens?
I am sure if you have foriegn countries comes here that opens us up for more illeagals which is what we do not need. As yerington said we need to clean our own back yard of the mess before we add to it. Gluba is also running on the same platform as Winborn did. so do we want to better Davenport or let in run as it has the past 2 years?
