Mayoral Race – Election Discussion
I started off with the mayoral race in the primaries and am ending there for the election. I think Walnut will approve
Bill Gluba
Gluba’s issues are to End the Bickering, Economic Growth, Infrastructure Needs, Public Safety, Gaming Industry in Davenport, and Improving our Neighborhoods. Bill’s current job is as a real estate agent. He has had some success in politics in the past and is familiar with the political environment.
Strengths – Bill’s past political experience tells me he is likely to know what is expected of him, of how to reach a cooperative agreement and of how to conduct himself. Two important attributes for a mayor. The current mayor has dealt with many tie votes and has consistently sided with one side. Wouldn’t it have been better to try to reach a consensus?
Weaknesses - He is a realtor. With all of the conspiracy theories of corruption with city deals and real esate/development, unless he is able to stay at arms length I could see some conflicts of interest arising. And he really didn’t need to bring up Phil’s firing from the DPD at the last debate, although with as low as Phil’s supporters have gone, reaching as far as Bill’s sons myspace page, at least Phil’s firing could be relevant.
Phil Yerington
Phil’s issues are Strengthen Public Safety, Citizen Input on Spending, Stop TIF’s for Development, Accurate Home Assesments, Rein in the City Administrator, Lead the Search for New Jobs, etc. There is more, you can go to his web page for more information.
Strengths – Phil isn’t afraid to take the tough and unpopular view on issues. He knows the issues in the police department andhas experience as mayor.
Weaknesses – Phil has a tumultuous past with the city. From taking on the nation pushing us for a flood wall to being fired from the DPD for faxgate (which was, actually, quite ridiculous). But all of his past seems to add up to a prediction of 2 more years of circus like antics at city hall. He has NOT helped this by taking contributions from the landlords. In fact, besides his family, he hasn’t had much financial support besides the landlords.
Summary
I was really disappointed to see Phil take from a group with such a negative history in our city politics. And the actions of Phil’s supporters have lived up to expectations. I like Phil, but I think voters will be afraid he will contribute to the circus atmosphere downtown and people have expressed they are sick of the landlords campaigning in our city. Add to that Bill received 45% of the vote in the primary, I think it’s easy to say Bill is the winner. I’ll point out I was wrong about Phil in the primary though. He beat out Jamie Howard in spite of my prediction. **shrug** – you can’t win them all!

I am the one who posted about Gluba’a sons myspace page and I am in no way in hell a phil supporter. I voted for Gluba in the prim and I am a member of my space and came across both Gluba’s son and Yerington’s son on myspace. so to blame yerington supporter for this without knowing your facts in just wrong. you edit other posts you do not agree with and say we need facts but you can post statements which are not facts? and btw I am still a Gluba supporter
So the part about “Now does this family sound like someone we want to run our city?” was just a hypothetical question? It wasn’t advocating for the opponent?
I am for Gluba and have been since the start. I actually bought my home from Bill.
I am fighting back after todays attack on my character. The special interests have started a negative and nasty attack and filed a bogus ethics complaint and then got the word out. I have not been notified of the complaint as of yet.
The ethics commission is interested in who sent the anonymous report to the media last week about me. If you know, please let me know or call the board.
Please help me fight for this town and for you as citizens. Come to 1010 West 15th Street tomorrow at 1 PM to get a bunch of fliers to get out the city voters. We need to act fast to get the word out about the bogus attacks.
Take your elections back. Please help. If you need me to run the fliers to you, please call at 529-9433 and I can do so. Or e-mail me at JOlsen1010@msn.com to let me know your address. Also, I can e-mail you the flier aswell to circulate in webland too.
Thanks for your support.

I see the QCTImes has endorsed Gluba. They endorsed Howard and she lost. Does anyone know when the last time an endorsed candidate by the Times has won an election?
Seems to me I read somewhere that every time they endorse that candidate loses.
The QCT tends to be out of touch with the average citizens. I think they may have finally gotten a few correct. My predictions match theirs in a few races.
Prediction: Gluba over Yerrington with a 2 to 1 margin
Gluba=owns over 30 parcels of real estate in Davenport, is in debt over 45,000 as reported by Barb Ickes, paid his son over 4,000 to do what? Doesn’t know how much time he can give his first priority is real estate
Yerington= had a slight temper while in office 6 years ago,has admitted he believes in Jesus, over 29 years of police work, has promised the mayors office would be open m-f 9-5
Hard choice people which looks better to you?
Snarky, thank you for the vote of confidence in Bill, we appreciate the support. Phil is a good man and has a lot of positive ideas to move our city forward, whichever candidate is lucky enough to be elected Tuesday should definately reach out to the other for help–I know if Bill is elected on Tuesday, he will reach out to Mr. Yerington for his advice, particularly on the subject of public safety. It has been a pleasure to manage my dad’s campaign, although the local blogosphere has been lukewarm at times to me personally, I still think it serves as a valuable voice for the public.
Just to clarify the “Anonymous #8″, Bill does NOT own 30 parcels of land in Davenport. That is flat-out wrong, aside from 2421 Gaines St. (his home), the only other piece of land he owns is a fishing lot in Buffalo, Iowa along the river–which is probably under water right now. We have had some fond memories there fishing and growing up, but it is nothing our family is getting rich over (the lot is about 200ft x 80 ft, and there is an old trailer there, which is nothing more than a glorifed storage shed). This can be varified by checking at the Scott County courthouse, I am sure there is some place you could look online for it? Secondly, Bill is not in debt over $45,000 from his congressional campaign, that is a lie as well. The “debt” was a loan he made to his congressional campaign, i.e. he put in his own money in the 2004 congressional cycle, I don’t remember the exact number, but I think it was around $80,000 from his personal retirement account. A candidate for federal office can loan his/her own race money, and retrieve this money whenever they want to. This money was spent campaigning in the congressional races in 2004 & 2006, and is gone. Bill is still “owed” around $44,000…which will never be recovered. I guess chalk that up to the cost of running for U.S. Congress…one of the reasons we need to have serious campaign finance reforms on the national level, but that is a completely other story. I have recieved $4,000 from his campaign committee. Guilty as charged. I was hired by the campaign committee over 2 months ago, the Friends of Bill Gluba for Mayor. I don’t want to take a lot of credit, but I have provided a professional campaign structure to a citywide race, built and maintained a website (www.glubaformayor.com), have done a lot of the media work, managed several direct mail/fundraising pieces, oversaw the yard sign drive, staffed all events/fundraisers, and have, in general, kept all of the trains “running on time”. Due to the hard work of Bill and our committee and volunteers, and in part to the service I have provided, we recieved 45% of the vote in the primary, and hopefully will be successful this Tuesday. If we are successful this Tuesday, I think the $4,000 was well-spent-but I leave that judgment to the committee.
As to the issue of Bill’s real estate business, he has managed to keep it alive for over 37 years while also devoting quality time to public service as a State Representative, State Senator, Scott County Supervisor, and Congressional candidate. I think this should be viewed as a very positive thing. He sells residential real estate in the Quad Cities for Re/Max River Cities, Inc. In his 30 plus years in the business, he has assisted HUNDREDS of families purchase homes in Davenport to raise their families here–these people pay property taxes, send their children to Davenport schools, and vote. As a realtor, Bill has recieved the Burt C. Frahm Real Estate Award. Although he doesn’t brag about it, I will…it is a local award given annually to 1 of the 1,200 Quad City Realtors for honest service to the community and industry. He markets this city to people everyday. He has been selling this city as a relocation specialist for years, and can bring those skills to the Mayor’s office. But the best part of his business is that he makes his own hours, and has a full-time licensed realtor who works as his assistant…so he will be more than capable to serve the city of Davenport, full-time. Successful realtors are experts in time management, and he is no exception.
If anyone has any questions regading issues, please refer to our website http://www.glubaformayor.com and I ask for everyone’s vote November 6th.
On a side note, we will be holding our election night get together at the Carriage Haus, this Tuesday night, from 8-11pm. Doc Hathaway’s jazz band will be providing some entertainment and there will be free beer/pop/h’our derves. Everyone is invited. Thank you.

What is that mess?
Wow, there are 4 properties in that mess, 2 he no longer owns, and then the 2 that Kevin mentioned above…nice try though.
Go to the site there is over 30
I’m confused why anyone would care if Gluba owns one or 30 parcels of land in Davenport anyway. Isn’t it the more the merrier if he actually did? Local landlords is the only way to go and by local I mean IN DAVENPORT.
Good editorial by Bill Sherwood on Yerington in today’s QC Times. I remember Phil’s awful remarks about Bill Sherwood’s teenager. And it’s not like Bill brought up anything about Phil’s son, so it was a one-way mud-slinging event. Goes to show what kind of man Phil really is when he attacks someone’s family to attempt to win an argument. He never retracted his comment even though it was completely baseless & stupid and he sure as heck never apologized. For a born-again man that he supposedly is that’s contradictory. Part of being “born again” is to admit your past wrongs and go about righting them.
Of course we all know that with Phil everyone else is always wrong and he’s the only right one out there.
I worked under the Phil & Martha regime and can assure the voting public that was the start of Davenport’s significant slide into the unprofessional mess it is today. He hired Malin, he meddled in PD every chance he got and he behaved like a small child in and out of council chambers when he didn’t get his way.
I don’t know a darn thing about Bill Gluba but I have to say that anyone that isn’t Phil has GOT to be better for our city and it’s much abused staff of employees.
Ya ok Johanna, It really hurts that others want nothing to do with you because of the fliers you are slinging so you decide to attack. I have heard you on Fisher, I have talked to you at forums. go bother someone else and stop your lies
I think the claim that Gluba owns 30+ properties based on a search on the Recorder’s site may be mistaken. At least eight of those entries are for his current residence. That same site has my wife and I in there four times, although I can assure you we just own one property.
You are right “not Surprized”. I put in my name and it comes up with TWO entries, and I only have ONE HOUSE (property). Maybe everyone should try it for yourself and see that this guy is lying about Gluba owning 30 properties.
Not surprised, thank you for finding that. My home is listed there multiple times as well. As I said above, the correct site to find current properties owned is in the assessor’s section. The link I posted takes you straight to his two current properties.
