Davenport Snarkiness

Looking for solutions.

Last Minute Dirty Politics

There have been many good people working hard in our community hoping to serve on our council to make our city better.  There has been a few incidents of dirty politics already, and my expectation is that they will explode over the weekend.

We have had posters show us the anonymous mailers against Lynn.  There was a newspaper article alleging the same thing is happening against Bill Boom in the third ward (I would love to see this one as well).  These are illegal by the way.  You are not allowed to distribute political literature without saying who you are.

I have tried to provide a forum here where people can look at facts and exchange ideas so they will be informed for the election.  Unfortunately, even that will be abused in the next few days as desperate lobbyists attempt to subvert the democratic process by vague allegations and unprovable innuendos.  I hope the average voter will take these attacks for what they are and not allow themselves to be swayed because some jerk thinking of his/her own benefit tries to cloud the real issues.

There are some great candidates out there.  I am saddened that some may have knowledge of these tactics and allow them to happen anyway.

The next two years we can accomplish a lot if we can put aside our history of negativity and move forward together.  This starts by ignoring those who want to distract you from the real issues.  We have crime problems.  We need better jobs for our area.  We need the west side sewer tunnel and the Promise could be a great tool.  We have inflated property taxes, slum landlords who are sucking the equity out of neighborhoods, and a flat growth rate.  Pick an issue, any issue, but PLEASE, don’t fall for the smears which are coming on full steam.

  1. The slum landlords are behind all of the smear campaigns. Get rid of them. They smell bad.

  2. This would be an older blonde woman? She is campaigning for Olsen and while she speaks highly of Jenn She is throwing her mouth about Boom and Lynn. Does not look good for Jenn. Jenn get rid of her she is causing you problems. I would not be surprised if she is working with Dan

  3. She is Joann Graller and kind of nutty. She is campaigning for Yerington, Gibbs, Meyer etc. as well. But, I hear, not with thier blessing. She is harmless.

  5. What we need to do is stay focused and ignore the garbage being tossed around. Those of us who have been attacked by these methods and those of us who have seen opponents attacked are additionally saddened by the implications. This garbage discourages people from voting at all, and that is in no one’s best interest. We as candidates believe that it may unfortunately get worse over the weekend. I only ask that voters consider all of the information gathered regarding issues and candidate profiles, and don’t let the garbage affect your vote at all. Certainly don’t allow the proponants of it to discourage your from voting. I believe that everyone running is a valid candidate. Let’s show all of these individuals who sling mud that citizens of Davenport will no longer allow THEIR garbage to affect OUR elections. They have no control if we don’t give it to them! Good Luck to all candidates, and at the end of this process may we comprise the best group of representatives to move this GREAT CITY forward!

  6. Johanna Graller Hitz you better get yourself a lawyer. The Boom camp will come calling on you to answer some troubling questions on behalf of our disgraceful sitting alderman that refuses to STAND UP and denounce this GARBAGE!!!
Keith Meyer, You are a hypocrit.

  7. Edited – no name calling here.

  8. Please do not blame Meyer for any of this. Johanna is doing this on her own with out the consent of others. Boom and Cunningham are not the only two she has trashed believe me there are more. She was questioned by the QCTimes and has denied all of these actions. I saw her one day at the office of Jim Fisher where she had these papers IN HAND and showing them off. I saw with my own eyes these in her hand as she was explaining her views with me

  9. Cunningham? I thought it was Lynn she was allegedly bashing.

  10. I want to thank the people who have supported me in this election and asked me to run. With the QCTimes promoting certain candidates and allowing (ADVERTISING in the editoral pages) I still have faith in the system and hope people will through all that. I have spent my own money to prove that I will not be elected for special interest groups. If people want to see the same government at work they can elect and Alderman At Large that voted with Howard 98% of the time. They can elect someone who has worked for the Chamber of Commerce over 30 years and been involved with the same direction as the previous elected officials. Or they can go with two new people in the position, Jen O. and myself. I feel people do have a choice to see new ideas and change for the future. I work a full time job, have raised my children, have been a volunteer, will work hard for Davenport. I also feel that there are people who will never see anything but negative about others, with no proof or even a reason to feel that way. I will meet anyone who wants to discuss the issues. I have seen the nameless bloggers who throw mud at NEW people who try to run for office. Its a shame but if they would come out and say who they are maybe we could all see them for whatever motivates them or their agenda. Thanks and I hope to see a big turnout on November 6th. Tina

  12. The mailer I was just shown listing a Gary Paulsen as the sender with Jennifer Olsen’s recent case with the supreme court just goes to show the complaint itself was a planned move.

Reminder people – this was filed at the last minute so there would be no opportunity for her to clear her name before the election. These people should be ashamed of themselves.

  13. Lets just hope she has enough to file a slander suit.

  15. I would love to see Johanna’s flier on Boom

    Comment by Anonymous | November 3, 2007

  16. Please remember that it is a rumor that Joanna was the one who sent the flier, not confirmed. I am only leaving these posts up because the accusation is all over the SOLO blog as well.

  17. And I too would like to see it.

  18. One has to wonder if this “allegation” just came to light late Thursday, and Jenn hasn’t even been legally notified, how is it in a mailer that we recieved today?

    Comment by anon | November 3, 2007

  19. It is confirmed it was Johanna when she stood in front of me at the radio group with flier in hand telling me about them. Used words I can not bear to post on your blog.

    Comment by Anonymous | November 3, 2007

  20. It’s confirmed by an anonymous poster which means it is unconfirmed. Even if you were to reveal who you are it would be your word only at this point. I’m not saying she didn’t do it, but it is at this point a rumor.

  21. Jennifer Olsen has been the focus of negative campaign attacks. I believe there is no place for those types of attacks in any campaign. Because the issue of the filing of a complaint with the Board of Professional Ethics and Grievances has been raised and Jennifer Olsen has answered, I believe the following is worth consideration:

For an attorney to advertise a Field Of Practice or to state their practice is Limited, they must comply with the terms and conditions of the Iowa Supreme Court Board of Professional Ethics and Grievances Rule, 41.9.

CLE, Continuing Legal Education, hours are required for accreditation to advertise for a Field Of Practice. Using the words “Specializing In Adoption”, for example, requires accreditation according to the Iowa Supreme Court Attorney Ethics Commission. The listing for Jennifer Olsen does not list any Fields Of Practice. If she were accredited for the specialty, it would be listed and she would be allowed to advertise the specialty ( see https://www.iacourtcommissions.org/icc/SearchLawyer.do).

I do believe that the complaint is nit-picky and politically motivated. I believe there was an oversight in the wording of Olsen’s campaign information and her bio to the Quad City Times.

My observations are based on the information found on the Iowa Supreme Court web site and my belief that Olsen deserves consideration. Was there a slip in judgment? Each voter needs to decide based on their own.

  22. Doug, Tina,
Thanks for showing your integrity by standing against this type of politics.

  23. The main point of concern two years ago facing this community unfortunately still continues to take precedence in our current political environment.
My highest priorities have remained unchanged for the last and current election.
I am committed to make these issues a continuing priority:
•public safety and security, funding neighborhood policing
•continuation of funds for upgraded- aging infrastructure, revitalization
•holding professional meetings with cost-effective budgeting process
•work with community leaders to reduce foreclosures/ maintaining home ownership
•economic development providing living wage jobs

Like our founders who set forth a vision that included exchanging goods across the river, current economic development embraces our past while continuing the vision to build positive solutions for future generations to enjoy. Reaching out to attract business to locate here and create new opportunities for this area has always been important.
I will take up the challenge of being the next alderman-at-large because I feel the possibilities are endless. Vote on Tuesday for bringing a new beginning to the way we get things done. Your voice will be heard by voting.

    Let’s work together
    Come on, come on
