Election Disclosures on County Website

The most recent disclosures can be found appearing here http://iecdb.iowa.gov/reports/browse.php?mode=county&next=SCOTT/City_Candidate

I’m always troubled by fishbowl donations totaling over a hundred dollars or so.  To me it seems people are afraid to show who is giving to them.  Or maybe I’m just a conspiracy nut ;)

Post any unusual donations or expenditures you find here.

  1. The world is just one big conspiracy fish bowl. Ya just choose your favorite and go for it. ;-)

  2. If you have 10 people who toss in 10 bucks cash then its toltaled to 100.00 so the fish bowl in most would be fair in saying. I donate cash. i only deal in cash and the candidate has no idea I dontaed or how much

  3. The fishbowl concept bothered me at first, too, Snarky. My concerns were two-fold: yours as expressed (regarding disclosure), and that I might miss thanking someone who had contributed. But then I learned that this is not only “how it’s done”, but how many folks like Anon #2 prefer it. In the end, I just opted to thank anyone who came to the event – which I would have done anyway.

Interesting sidebar: I also learned from the IECDB that all single contributions of $25 and under can be lumped together on a disclosure as “unitemized”, which means that only those donations of $25.01 and more have to be individually attributed. Nonetheless, everyone seems to report the $25 checks singly, so I did likewise.

I used the IECDB’s new Web Reporting System and filed early yesterday afternoon. The interface warned that clicking “OK” would mean that my submission would immediately become public, so I assumed it would be viewable right away. As of last night, it still wasn’t on the site, but I trust that it will be soon. In fact, I’ll go check again now. ;-)

  4. Lisa, I was very surprosed as I read the times today that you are as old as they claim. I have met you and you look like you are about 25 years old. I hope I look this good at your age. best of luck to you on Tuesday

  5. Thanks, Anon #4. I’ll be 44 in January, and you’re very kind. It’s cliche, but wear sunscreen and stay out of the tanning booth. ;-)

And FYI to all – I just got the following email from Sue Micllef at the IECDB:

    Lisa,

I just checked and it does show that the report was timely filed.

We’re having a problem with the system but it should show up no later than early afternoon. I can see that it was filed but the public cannot see it yet.

    Thanks,

    ~Sue

  6. I am just suspicious of anyone who deals in cash these days. I haven’t used it in years. ;)
I’m sure the fishbowl’s are considered an accepted practice, from looking at candidates disclosures you can see it is, but I still think it’s a good way to hide where your support is coming from.

  7. My thoughts on the mayoral forum –

Phil being nauseated by blog comments was disturbing. I hope he sees a doctor for that.

Yerington had a good point – Holding D-One accountable for city’s donations.

But Yerington’s view of the city seems to be more negative than it is in reality, and I didn’t get the sense that he has learned how to put personality conflicts aside.

Gluba didn’t need to bring up Phil’s firing (and it was a firing, even if it was later changed administratively to a retirement). But I didn’t think he was any more negative than Phil.

I really enjoyed hearing Gluba talk about how we are looking too close to home in recruiting businesses. It shows an awareness of what we will need to bring businesses here to bring up the fact that foreign companies would be a good place to look for investors in our community. We live in a global economy and we need to tailor our efforts with that in mind.

Overall, I think who ever you supported going into this debate is who you will still be supporting coming out.

  8. Not at all. I went supporting Gluba and voted Gluba in the primaries. Yerington has now got my vote due to last night

  9. Did anyone see the news story on Jenn Olsen on Channel 4? Seems she is being investigated by the State.

  10. Like Lisa and Comment #2, I’m sort of ok with “fishbowl” type donations, but when I see $6,000 attributed to “Various Cash Contributions”, my eyes do pop out of their head a bit.

  11. Why post something about a story on 4, and not tell the whole story of what was stated. I think its a lie.

    Comment by TMC | November 2, 2007

  12. I saw olsen on 4 last night and all it was is she was accusing someone of attacking her. I have heard nothing about her being attack and with her accusing on tv she just lost my vote. looks like Jen is trying to stir the pot

    Comment by Anonymous | November 2, 2007

  13. What!? A candidate responds to an attack that you personally haven’t heard, and they lose your vote? That’s about the most ridiculous reason for voting against someone I’ve ever heard.

    Comment by anonymous | November 2, 2007

  14. Really – Dan you are a big d**K. Or have a little one – maybe that is the problem.

  15. D1 dumped tons of loot into Meeker and Frink. Boy, they want him bad. I wonder if the rest of the city does?

    Comment by anon | November 2, 2007

  16. I do hope the next council holds D-One accountable for the city’s donation. If they have money to back candidates, I hope its not our money doing so.

Jenn may be talking about Vesole stalking her a few weeks ago.

  17. Yerington stated at Genesis he will hold D1 accountable. Gluba thinks D1 is doing a wonderful job as they are.

  18. Speaking of D1, I submitted the following post to the RCR in response to their editorial this week. And since the IECDB still hasn’t posted my filing (argh!), I thought it merited copying here.

    Lisa

    ***********
“Regarding my relationship to “Citizens for a Better Davenport”: I was invited to meet with representatives of this group early in the campaign and expressed my honest opinion on many subjects, D1 being just one of them.

Also, some of those actively involved in the PAC have vocally opposed D1 in the past and probably will in the future. I found the group I spoke with to be very balanced in terms of advocacy (taxpayer vs. commerce). Loxi Hopkins of QC Interfaith interviewed me, for example — and she’s hardly what I’d call an apologist for big business.

For myself, I was straight-up about two things related to D1 in my interview – that they need to do more to support small and homegrown businesses in our older corridors and they need to be more flexible in their thinking when it comes to bringing ideas before the council. They can’t expect to just force things through and win by one vote – it’s not good for the city and it’s not good for them as an organization, either.

I also made it crystal clear that I was willing to accept the PAC’s support but would probably tick some of them off royally now and again because my vote and my loyalty to the residents of the west side are not for sale to ANYONE. I said as much to the folks in organized labor, too. I hold three union cards and have received tremendous support from my brothers and sisters in the unions. As a long time union member and elected officer, I know as much about what is WRONG with labor as what’s right about it, and I would never support a flawed agenda just because it came from the unions.

I received an IN-KIND contribution the PAC valued at $450 (for photography on my mailers). I’ve received somewhere in the neighborhood of about $1,200 from various unions and $2,000 from my dad and his wife (bless them). Chris and I kicked in $500 of our own money and the rest has come from a wide variety of generous contributors who support my candidacy and platform. I’m proud to say that we raised a lot of money and equally proud to say that we’ve put it to good use — and that it was all offered in support of a common goal: to make things better in the city of Davenport.

Just thought I’d offer that info up here because the IECDB has yet to post my filing. I used their Web Reporting System and they let me know that my filing was received on time (even early)but the system is having problems.

    Thanks — Lisa Lewis”
