The Fifth Ward
The fifth ward has been represented by Bill Lynn for the past few years.
Bill Lynn
Bill Lynn has been representing the fifth ward for a few years now. He is known for bringing in the guardian angels as well as leading the charge in taking out the NEO. Bill has a website at www.profbilllynn.com. Bill’s issues are Crime, Growth & Jobs, and Improving City Services.
Strengths- Bill has a very loyal following. He has been in contact with his constituents throughout his term and is one of the best aldermen in that respect. Between his website, his newsletters and his regular ward meetings, he makes his ward’s residents feel as if they have a voice through him on the council. He also brought the Guardian Angels to town, which was an innovative way to look at reducing crime.
Weaknesses - His actions the past few years have angered those who feel he is only representing the landlords interests. The dismantling of the NEO as well as the RTO ordinance have left a lot of unhappy voters.
Doug Cunningham
Doug Cunningham has run for council in the past. He works with NHS which to my knowledge has done some great rehabs in our central city. His issues are Increase in Public Safety Resources, Restore Trust and Accountability to City Government, Increase Citizen and Business Opportunities. You can find more information at his website http://www.dougcunningham.org/
Strengths – Doug has been active in his community for years so he has name recognition for voters. With the recent screw up on the RTO ordinance and the circus like atmosphere downtown voters have expressed they are looking for change. Doug has solid ideas and is a viable candidate. He has been out pounding the pavement to get his ideas out to the voters which will be very important.
Weaknesses- We all know the landlords are and will continue to be active in trying to get Lynn back on the council. Mudslinging and autodialers are expected.
Summary
Your guess is as good as mine on how the dust will settle. Voters say they want a clean slate all the time and it rarely happens. Bill Lynn garnered 60% of the vote in the primary. How many votes have the landlords turned off since then?

Cunningham is the better choice because, despite Lynn’s rep as being responsive, his actions are very very contrary to what his issues are. He disbanded the NEO without input from anyone from the public. It appears he did that as a favor for Lubell. He then passed a Rent to Own ordinance after he was screwed over in a RTO deal. He also used Richard Vesole for his attorney, the same attorney who appeared in defense of Lynn’s ordinance. Is this coincidence Bill? Getting rid of the NEO places the ward at risk of crime and more blight. Passing a RTO places the ward at risk of more crime and blight. Bill needs to explain himself.
Walk out your front door in the 5th ward, if everything that you can see is as you would want it to continue to be, vote Lynn, if not take a chance. Kirkwood blvd is inter-nationally televised is it what you want people to believe is the best we can be, if yes vote Lynn, if not take a chance. My view – Cunningham is our man.
We are falling apart alraedy on our consensuses of ‘one opinion under one name’ when it comes to Cunningham. We only have one voter for that ward so we decided to post thier thier opinion which is, ” Glad to see he (Doug) is not in D1’s pocket”. So now we may have to post under ‘5 for Davenport’. -Snary we wish you were not so computer predjudice, this is getting hard for us.
I just went to Cunningham’s website for a second time and it has changed some, I just wanted to let you know that it appears he’s adding information.
I am ashamed to admit I voted for Ald. Lynn in the last two elections and actually did campaigning for his on the election two years ago. To the 5th ward and the city as a whole, I’m sorry. I was wrong about this guy. He is bad for Davenport and bad for 5th ward. He hangs around with thugs and you have to believe he’s getting something more from the landlord group than just their vicious anti-campaigns against his competition. Think about the Mike Loos situation if you remember it. “Free” work for silence? How much free work do you suppose Lynn has had done on his own rental properties and homes from this group? And/or free or bargain properties even. Can’t always tell what people own by going just by names on deeds.
I imagine if Lynn ever went against the landlord group on anything he would be the next one they would “expose” at a public meeting for accepting bribes, etc. Nope, don’t know any of this for a fact but I’ve heard some rumblings around city hall and have to say it does make you wonder doesn’t it?
The slumlords have been quiet on the blogs lately. Perhaps they are blotting and planning thier attacks on Cunningham and Olsen and Gluba. I encourage all to check the disclosures next week. Remember they are called Taxpayers United. If a candidate took money, don’t vote for them. In Lynn’s case it will be buried in another donation. My guess is the boys paid someone to donate to his campaign so there is no mention of the PAC.
I believe this election is going to get really ugly. I choice is Cunningham and I feel Lynn’s alliance with the landlord group needs to be exposed to the common folk. Get out there and let the people know what a terrible Alderman Lynn is and what little he has done for his ward.
Good Morning – I am doing a what I hope will be a mass literature drop today door to door in the 5th, If you are so inclined please come by Kirkwood and Grand at 10:00 and pick up some flyers to distribute to your neighbors. The flyers include what I see as a plan to address some of the issues in our Ward. We don’t have much time before the election and I could sure use your help.
Doug
How many volunteers showed up this morning to pass flyers out for Doug?
I believe that would be 3 volunteers. He is out again today on his own.
Is that you Dan or Vesole hiding in the bushes taking notes? I believe there was closer to a dozen folks that showed up.
I haven’t heard how many took part, but I know they covered almost all of the 4th precinct in the 5th Ward. Go Doug!
Flyers didn’t make it to parts of 14th St. Unless no one bothers places that has yard signs up. I’d like to see one. Drop it in the mailbox or hang it on the outside door.
I agree it will get ugly on both sides. Whether either candidate agrees to it or not. It would go a long way if we can get the money out of it.
Nitrous – I will be happy to get you one, but this weekend we concentrated on the precincts in the 5th ward where I faired the worst in the primary, namely precincts 3 and 4. You are in precinct 2 (my home precinct) and I promise not to miss all of the 2nd and 1st precinct in the next 8 days. If I can’t get to every door, I will mail information, but I would like the opportunity to talk to the voters also.
Doug
Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Someone has a serious grudge against Lynn for some reason (and for the record, I’m not implying that it’s Cunningham because this same garbage happened last election too.)
An anonymous letter arrived in my mailbox today bashing Lynn. No “paid for by…”, no bulk mail indicia, and no coherent message. Lynn associates with people who support free trade? And that matters in a city election how exactly?
I live in the 5th ward and haven’t seen received a letter bashing Lynn yet. But who cares, Lynn is trash anyway along with those landlords.
Sure, sure, Junkman, I’m just imagining the hit piece, and besides, Lynn deserves it, right?
Well, I guess bashing is ok depending who it is, right Junkman? I didn’t get it either, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
I beginning to believe that we have a council that represents the attitude on it’s citizens.
I would love to see a copy of the flier if anyone can scan it and e-mail it to me.
I emailed a scan of the letter to Snarky, but in case any one else wants to see it, it’s also here:

I heard Cunningham on Fisher today, he had a lot of good ideas and some financial ways to make them happen without increasing expenses or taxes. What did everyone else think?
I didn’t get to hear all (month end), but he does have some ideas. Like moving away from the self funding of health care and taking the savings and using it to fund more police officers.
