Davenport Snarkiness

Looking for solutions.

The Seventh Ward

The seventh ward currently is represented by Barney Barnhill. Barnhill has been in office for quite a few terms.

Barney Barnhill

As stated above, Barney is the incumbent. He has been a fixture on the council for many years. His issues are Economic Development – bringing in new jobs and businesses, Public Safety – new officers and expand Nets, Save Taxpayer Dollars, Attract Businesses to gateway corridors through tax incentives.

Strengths - Barney has been around for years and has a large following from the older voters, the type who like to pick a candidate once and leave them. His issues are some of the main ones for Davenport and he lists some of the same ideas as many other candidates to address them.

Weaknesses- He’s been in office for a long time and has survived in spite a
call to “Clean the Slate” many times. He is a very likeable guy but doesn’t seem to have any new or original ideas. He isn’t putting forth new and thoughtful programs.

Jim Davis

Jim “Doc” Davis is a Davenport native and a chiropractor. His issues are Spending, Administration (working together), Gangs-Violence-Drugs-Crime, Cameras, Enhancing the Riverfront, West End Development.

Strengths - Davis doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk, quite literally. He has made it known he is with the Guardian Angels. His support for citizen involvement is good to hear. His ideas are different at a time when people are looking for change.

Weaknesses- His ward has a lot of older neighborhoods with an older population who tends to shield themselves from change, whether it’s needed or not. Some of his ideas are pretty lofty, although it is good to see someone thinking outside the box.

Marcia Patch

Marcia is another candidate who has chosen not to have a website. I haven’t seen an e-mail address for her either. My analysis is based on her QCT Q&A.

Strengths - Marcia has some interesting ideas as well. I like that she talks about making people keep up their properties to minimum standards and no other candidate I’ve come across is talking about that. She also talks about standing up for our existing businesses to retain them. Again, a good idea.

Weaknesses- I hate to continue beating the drum for websites and e-mails but so many people look to the web these days for their information. In talking with people of the 7th ward I find many haven’t heard of Marcia. She is hopefully out knocking on doors daily to get her word out.

Eric Swanson

Eric is the non-candidate of the seventh ward. He has no website, he has no e-mail address I could find, he has not filled out the QCT Q&A. There is little doubt he won’t make it further. It just begs the question, why bother to fill out the paperwork and get the signatures to run, 2 elections in a row, if you don’t want to campaign?

My prediction is that Barney will make it through the primary. Eric Swanson will not. I think it will be a tight race between Marcia and Jim. I see Jim edging out ahead, but could be wrong.

  2. I read somewhere on a blog Eric Swanson shot a young man does anyone know if this is true. I myself can’t seem to find anything on him at all. You are right it doesnot help if the candidates do not have a web site they are unknown

  3. We need a new alderman in the 7th ward. Barney has become part of the problem with this council.

I remember the last time he ran for election he stated, if the storm water fee comes up for reconsideration I will vote against it. So what did he do, he voted for it. Nice job lying to us Barney.

As far as being a team player, Barney badmouths Ambrose and Lynn every chance he gets. He is a back stabber behind the scenes.

Barney has been the 7th ward alderman for so long he has become complacent with his duties. His follow through with promises is faltering.

Barney Barnhill is a charter member of the Drunken Sailors Spending Team.

I believe Doc Davis will be a breath of fresh air in the 7th.

  5. Hell, I was sort of hoping to see Barnhill voted out myself, but if he’s really bad-mouthing Ambrose and Lynn, he can’t be all bad. Let’s keep him.

  6. Snarky – what other wards are you planning on doing before Tuesday?

  7. Lets keep Barnhill and the rest of them. To hell with Davenport, let it go down the crapper. Yea that’s the ticket.

    Clean slate in 08!

  8. Quite the delimma,

First we have Barnhill, I agree he is part of the problem. Chairing the Safety Committee, this 3% rent-to-own came in hidden under the wire with the thanks from Lynn, Ambrose, and Hamerlinck. There’s also the code change nobody talks about. That being, if owner’s relative lives in a rental, it is not inspected by fire inspectors. The only proof the inspectors have that it’s only relatives living their is the owner’s word. Now if the owners son has 10 friends living there, too bad. That’s when you have a problem like the folks living on Brown Street by Ambrose U.

Then there’s Doc Davis, friends with Bill Lynn…enough said!

Eric Swanson, when I asked a few cops about him, they said that he quit before being fired..

Now what! The 7th ward is no better than the mayor race.

    Comment by nitrous55 | October 8, 2007

  13. No guts that’s all. Just bad mouth all candidates and write on the blog. You were approached to run? – doubtful.

  14. Ok, that’s enough back and forth about other posters. Does anyone have something to say about the candidates?

  15. I won’t support Marcia Patch either, another landlord. I wouldn’t be suprised if she hung with the scum from the QCRPA

    Comment by Walnut | October 8, 2007

  16. Nevermind! I can’t support Doc Davis. I wasnt aware he was such good friends with Bill Lynn

  17. To be honest, I forgot about Marcia. Haven’t seen or heard from her all season. I guess I’ll vote for myself. Right Nitrous55?!

  18. Right.

  19. I just think Doc Davis is odd. A nut to be exact.

    Comment by anon | October 8, 2007

  20. Odd? Have you ever realy listened to Barnhill talk. He rambles along at 90mph and when he is through you have no idea what he realy said. He jumps from one subject to another. If I didn’t know better I would think Barnhill and Meyer were brothers.

  21. Ouch…that hurts… I can’t stop laughing from the last post. That was a good one.

I sat at the voters table for 10 minutes trying to decide who to vote for in the 7th ward. I gave up and took Nitrous’s advise and voted for myself. God help us all!
